Nintendo to Release `Revolution' Game Console in 2006 (Update3)
May 17 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the world's biggest maker of hand-held game machines, said it will begin selling a new game console, code-named Revolution, in 2006 that may cost less than competing products from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
The device, the successor to GameCube, will be compatible with games written for its predecessor, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said today at a press conference in Los Angeles. Customers will be able to download and play games from past Nintendo systems stretching back 20 years.
``They continue to play toward the younger audience,'' said Rob Enderle, an analyst at San Jose, California-based Enderle Group. ``Their product appears to be quite a bit less expensive'' than the competition.
Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, is seeking to boost its share of the $6.16 billion video-game-console market amid heightening competition from Sony and Microsoft, which have already released details of their new consoles. Nintendo's next console is designed for games and isn't intended to serve as a hub for other gadgets, Reggie Fils-Aime, an executive vice president, said in an interview.
Nintendo also announced the new Game Boy Micro, a handheld game player small enough to fit in pants pockets. The silver metal Game Boy Micro measures 4 inches wide (10.2 centimeters), 2 inches tall and 0.7 inches deep. It weighs 2.8 ounces (80 grams).
Prices
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo haven't disclosed the price they intend to charge for their new consoles. Microsoft's new Xbox may cost about $400, Sony's may cost about $300 and Nintendo's new console may cost $150 to $200, Enderle said.
``We do not want to go down a path to be at the center of the living room,'' said Fils-Aime, who oversees Nintendo's U.S. sales and marketing. He said the additional options offered in Microsoft and Sony's products will make them more expensive.
Fils-Aime declined to be more specific on when the new Nintendo console will be released or whether it will be available first in Japan.
Enderle said Nintendo is in danger of becoming a niche player in the game industry and that its position may come under pressure from Sony and Microsoft as they seek to expand the range of consumers who play computer games.
``Microsoft and Sony can move into Nintendo's space at their leisure,'' he said.
Sony has sold more than 87 million PlayStations. Microsoft has sold 20 million Xbox players and Nintendo has sold 18 million of its game consoles. Microsoft plans to start selling the Xbox 360 late this year. Sony's PlayStation 3 will debut by June 2006.
Smallest Yet
The Nintendo console will be the company's smallest yet at roughly the ``size of three standard DVD cases,'' Iwata said. The disk bay will be able to run two formats: the 12-centimeter optical disks used for the new system and GameCube, and DVDs with the help of an attachment.
The system will have 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wireless Fidelity or Wi-Fi capability for Internet access, Nintendo said.
The new console will be built around a microprocessor from International Business Machines Corp. The new system from Microsoft also has an IBM chip, while Sony will use one developed with IBM and Toshiba Corp.
Nintendo will use a graphics chip from ATI Technologies Inc. that's been code-named Hollywood, the company said.
Square Enix Co. is working on a Wi-Fi enabled version of its ``Final Fantasy'' game series for the Revolution, Iwata said.
