Protection Paladin PvP Guide - Battle for Azeroth 8.0.1
Last updated 4 hr 6 min ago View Changelog
Welcome to Avengelyne's Protection Paladin guide for Arena PvP (Player vs Player)! This guide outlines the strengths and weaknesses of the specialization, strong compositions, and effective strategies. It also includes advice on talent builds, PvP talent builds and racial traits.
This PvP Guide is maintained by Method and Friends! Method is an esports organization that includes one of WoW's top guilds, MDI and PvP teams. For more PvP oriented guides written by the best arena players of their classes, check out Method's Guides on Wowhead!
Note: This guide has been updated to reflect the changes in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch. Further updates will be made for BfA.
PvP Talents
PvP talents are very similar to Legion Honor Talents, just with a different interface. You have four talents to pick, one being your PvP Trinket (a choice between
Gladiator's Medallion,
Adaptation, and
Relentless), and the other three being any choice between your remaining PvP talents.
These talents are accessed from the main Talent tab instead of a separate Honor Talent Tab, and you pick four instead of six. You do not need to grind out Prestige in order to unlock PvP talents.
Enabling PvP Talents
You can only disable or enable PvP Talents in Stormwind for the Alliance or Orgimmar for the Horde. To select. your PvP Talents, open up your Talent Panel, hit the carrot at the top right for "PvP Talents", and select. the talents you prefer.
You can change your talents out in the world via
Tome of the Quiet Mind.

Blessing of Protection/
Blessing of Spellwarding/
Guardian of the Forgotten Queen) were already on the GCD.
Hand of the Protector being on the GCD makes it a little less available, but doesn't significantly change the way the class plays. The same goes for Avenging Wrath.
For more information on the GCD changes, click here.
Blessing of Sacrifice,
Blessing of Protection or
Blessing of Spellwarding (aka BoP for magic spells),
Divine Shield and
Guardian of the Forgotten Queen (a Divine Shield for your teammates). You also have good off-healing, and of course, the usual Paladin utility like
Cleanse,
Blessing of Freedom. etc. On top of this, you have a full tank defensive kit.
Hammer of Justice and
Avenger's Shield's silence combos are available almost immediately as soon as diminishing returns finish. Protection Paladins can also spec into additional CC with
Steed of Glory's knockback, making them one of the most disruptive specializations in the game. In case you don't have enough silences with
Avenger's Shield, Protection Paladins also have
Rebuke as a short cooldown interrupt. Thanks to the high haste on Protection Paladin's PvP template,
Repentance also becomes very viable, having. a one second cast time when
Seraphim is active.
Demonbolt and
Implosion can kill you 100-0 if they crit and you can't mitigate the damage.
Inquisition. However, if you're being kited and your
Inquisition debuff falls off, you will lose a lot of pressure. Additionally, if your DPS partner is CC'd, you will certainly lose all of your pressure.
Inquisition also increases their
Atonement healing. Holy Priests and Holy Paladins also work well for more niche compositions.
For your third member, the same rule as 2s applies: Pick classes that can benefit the most from your control. I've found out that Feral Druid is the best partner a Protection Paladin can get, and Survival Hunter also works very well.
I have also had success with:
Every Man for Himself really helps in saving cooldowns and saving your teammates in tough situations where you otherwise wouldn’t be able to do so. Not only can it save your teammates but it can also save you, as it allows you to get out of a stun where the enemy team may be focusing you with cooldowns. Overall, it's a strong racial for Protection Paladins.
Arcane Torrent, has changed from an AoE silence to essentially an AoE purge, removing one beneficial effect from all enemies within 8 yards (and restoring 3% of your mana). It is also on the GCD. This may affect your choice when choosing a Horde race.
Judgment and
Shield of the Righteous to burst/mitigate as needed, and to get
Hammer of Justice off cooldown as often as possible.
Hammer of the Righteous doesn’t do much damage, but it can be used as filler if you have nothing better to press.
Avenger's Shield should usually be saved for when you need a silence, but it can be used if you get a
Grand Crusaderproc after or shortly after using your
Avenger's Shield for the silence.
Maximizing disruption and cooldown reduction is more important than dealing damage. You should only focus on actual damage when going for a kill setup.
Consecration should be used as a snare with the
Consecrated Ground talent. It's incredibly good against Feral Druids because they can’t shapeshift out of the snare, since it’s a persistent ground effect. It’s also sometimes useful to run slightly ahead of whoever you’re attacking and put a
Consecration there.
Some Protection Paladin talents have undergone changes in Battle for Azeroth. For a more detailed explanation of Prot Paladin talents, please check out our Protection Paladin BfA Talent Build page.

Inquisition
Repentance. Essentially, just use your
Inquisition when you setup CC chains or run at healers.
Inquisition up for your team.
Guardian of the Forgotten Queen and
Sacred Duty for defensive power against burst setups, and coordinate your defensives with your healer.
Holy Shield for the extra passive damage and
Luminescence for the passive healing. Protection Paladin and Discipline Priest together should be very good against DoT classes.
Blessing of Freedom,
Cleanse,
Blessing of Protection, etc. Those are the only Macros you really need. Some example macros are below:
Inquisition debuff. Don’t use
Inquisitionuntil your team is ready to do damage because it can easily fall off and get wasted.
Don’t throw
Avenger's Shield right before your silence is up or until it's necessary. Otherwise, you will have to wait to be able to use your silence, and potentially lose a good CC window because of it.
Some melee classes, despite their role, deal mostly magical damage (e.g. Retribution Paladins and Death Knights).
Blessing of Spellwarding negates most of their damage, so don’t take
Blessing of Protection against them.
Be careful when using
Shield of the Righteous to do damage. You could find yourself actually needing to use it for mitigation shortly after.
Make sure to use your
Hand of the Protector when you or your target actually takes damage. Since it heals for a portion of your missing health, it won't do much unless the person you are using it on is missing a lot of it. Don't waste it trying to 'top off' someone, let your healer do that instead.

Protection Paladin Strengths
Strong Defensive Kit
In PvP, Protection Paladins have the strongest defensive cooldown kit out of any specialization in the game. You have![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_sealofsacrifice.gif)

Protection Paladin Weaknesses
Vulnerable to Stuns
Protection Paladins are extremely vulnerable to stuns. Tank specs take increased damage in PvP, but we have active mitigation on demand so this means you can survive pretty much anything unless you’re caught in a stun without your mitigation (or any defensives) up. If this happens, you will die faster than any other spec in the game. Also, very high damage attacks like![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_warlock_demonbolt.gif)

Low Damage

Strong Compositions
2v2
having. low damage output overall, Protection Paladins pair better with classes that can deliver strong pressure and benefit from the numerous CCs Protection Paladins bring to the table. Some compositions that work very well in 2s are:-
Protection Paladin/Feral Druid
-
Protection Paladin/Windwalker Monk
-
Protection Paladin/Survival Hunter
-
Protection Paladin/Frost or Unholy Death Knight
3v3
For your healer, you should almost always play with a Discipline Priest. They have a strong offensive presence paired with their strong shields, and your![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_unyieldingfaith.gif)

Recommended Talent Build
Specialization: Protection
Uses Holy magic to shield and defend allies from attackers. Preferred Weapon: Sword, Mace, Axe, and Shield
Some Protection Paladin talents have undergone changes in Battle for Azeroth. For a more detailed explanation of Prot Paladin talents, please check out our Protection Paladin BfA Talent Build page.
Tier 1 -
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/inv_shield_1h_hyrja_d_01.gif)
-
Holy Shield is very good against any team that has magic DoTs, as it delivers good passive damage and can mitigate a lot of damage from double wizard teams.
-
The other two talents have very little relevance in PvP.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_enlightenedjudgements.gif)
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/paladin_protection.gif)
-
Take
Crusader's Judgment 95% of the time so you can get more Hammers of Justice with
Fist of Justice.
-
Bastion of Light can be good for extra burst and if you have more stuns on your team, e.g. if you’re playing with an Assassination Rogue.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_fistofjustice.gif)
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_prayerofhealing.gif)
-
Fist of Justice should be your default pick.
-
Repentance is very good if you can use it appropriately.
-
It’s particularly good against Holy Paladins and Holy Priests, and somewhat useful against Discipline Priests (although they can break it). It doesn’t work on beasts, so Shaman can
Ghost Wolf to immune it (although it can be
Purged from them). They also have
Wind Shear and
Grounding Totem, so you usually have to get it out of stuns, but it can be done if you play something like Protection/Feral where the Feral can
Mighty Bash for you when you don’t have
Hammer of Justice. Druids can shapeshift it, so I usually don’t take it against Druids.
-
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_blessingofprotection.gif)
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_divinesteed.gif)
-
Take
Blessing of Spellwarding if you need a magic immunity.
-
If you need the physical immunity from
Blessing of Protection, pick
Cavalier.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_blessedhands.gif)
-
Hand of the Protector is the default pick in 95% of cases.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_righteousvengeance.gif)
-
The constant snare from
Consecrated Ground is too good to pass up.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_shieldofthetemplar.gif)
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_paladin_seraphim.gif)
-
Righteous Protector is the default pick here.
-
Seraphim can be picked if you want faster
Repentances or more burst damage.
Recommended PvP Talents
PvP Trinket -![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_pvp_gladiatormedallion.gif)
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/ability_bossdarkvindicator_auraofcontempt.gif)
-
Relentless is best used to refresh the
Inquisition debuff more often.
-
Gladiator's Medallion is usually best against things like Mage/Rogue or setup comps.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_heroism.gif)
-
Guardian of the Forgotten Queen is extremely powerful, but keep in mind that it can be CC’d.
-
Guardian of the Forgotten Queen - Empowers the friendly target with the spirit of the forgotten queen, causing the target to be immune to all damage for 10 sec.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/inv_shield_60.gif)
-
The on-demand AoE silence on
Shield of Virtue is too good to pass up.
-
Shield of Virtue - When activated, your next Avenger's Shield will interrupt and silence all enemies within 8 yards of the target.
![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_unyieldingfaith.gif)
-
Inquisition is one of the reasons why Protection Paladins are so good. Always keep it up!
-
Inquisition - Intimidates the target, increasing their damage taken by 3% for 6 sec. Each unique player that attacks the target increases the damage taken by an additional 3%, stacking up to 5 times. Your melee attacks refresh the duration of Intimidated.
Effective Strategies
Charge the Healers
Running at healers is your bread and butter strategy against most comps. It really depends on the DPS you’re playing with. Protection/Elemental is very good against Mages, for example. Protection/Feral can do this as well, utilizing![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_prayerofhealing.gif)

Positioning
Always be attacking what your DPS partner is attacking. There is no point going off on your own because you do no damage by yourself, and it’s important to keep![](http://wow.zamimg.com/images/wow/icons/tiny/spell_holy_unyieldingfaith.gif)
Defensive Play
If you somehow completely run out of defensives, it can be a good idea to run around the pillar until they are back. In most cases, playing defensively as a Protection Paladin is all about coordination with your healer.Playing Against Melee
In most cases, run at their healer, unless one of the melee are killable by your DPS after a setup.Playing Against Burst Classes

Defending Your Team
Remember that your job as a Protection Paladin in Arena is not to focus on damage, but to protect your teammates and help create kill setups at all costs.Useful Macros
