No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.
누구도 그 자체로 온전한 섬이 아니라,
모든 사람은 대륙의 한 조각, 본토의 일부분이니.
한 덩이 흙이 바닷물에 씻겨 나가더라도, 유럽 대륙은 그만큼 줄어들고,
만(灣)이 씻겨 나가도, 그대 벗의 영지나 그대 자신의 영지가 씻겨 나가도 마찬가지라.
그 누구의 죽음이라 할지라도 나를 줄이는 것이니, 내가 인류에 속해 있기 때문이리라.
그런고로 누구를 위하여 저 조종(弔鐘)은 울리나 알아보려고 사람을 보내지 말라.
그것은 또한 그대를 위하여 울리는 것이므로.
